Examination
For those nurses involved in joint examination as part of their role (e.g., emergency nurse practitioners or clinical nurse specialists) we provide information about basic examination (pGALS paediatric Gait, Arms, Legs and Spine). pGALS helps to identify abnormal joints or regions and we would recommend pGALS as part of a general assessment and especially when a child complains of a musculoskeletal problem, is limping or there is a change in function (play, sport, daily activities).
There are many resources to support pGALS learning and teaching.
- A free e-book from Versus Arthritis- this includes pGALS and much more!
- Guidance on when to perform pGALS and Practical tips in performing pGALS.
- pGALS - a simple musculoskeletal assessment for children. Foster HE and Jandial S. Pediatric Rheumatology Online 2013.
- The pGALS App - Google Play and Apple Store - with multiple language translations, explanatory notes, images, and relevant links to PMM.
